How to download repair data for your group or event

Restarters is built on open source principles. Not only is the underlying code accessible to everyone, but you also have full access to your own data.

If you’re a group host or network coordinator, you can download all the repair data uploaded for your group(s) and for each of your individual events.

This can be useful if you want to save your own backup somewhere, move to a different platform or perform your own analysis.

Here’s how it works…

Download your group’s repair data

To download all the repair data for your group, you need to be a host of the group or a coordinator for the group’s network.

Follow these steps to download the repair data for your group:

  1. Go to your group’s page (you can find your group(s) here)
  2. Click/tap on the ‘group actions’ button and select ‘Download repair data’, as below:

This will download all of your group’s repair data as a .csv file, which you can open with all common spreadsheet software.

Download stats about all your group’s events

If you are the host of a group or a coordinator for a group’s network, it’s possible to download summary stats about all of your group’s events, including the impact stats generated on Restarters.

More details here:

Download your event’s repair data

To download all the repair data for an individual event, you need to be a host of the group that ran the event or a coordinator for that group’s network.

:bulb: The ‘export group data’ function (described above) includes information about the event at which each item was seen.

Follow these steps to download the repair data for an individual event:

  1. Go to the event’s page
  2. Click/tap on the ‘event actions’ button and select ‘Download event data’, as below:

This will download all of the repair data added to the event as a .csv file, which you can open with all common spreadsheet software.

Thanks James!
However, it doesn’t work for me - the dropdown in, for example, neither the Restart Group nor Hackney’s group contain the ‘Export’ choice when I am logged in. Are the public allowed to see this data or is it restricted in some way?

Hi Chris, thanks for trying this out. To download a group’s data, you need to be a designated ‘host’ of that group. Hosts have a little label by the name in the list of volunteers, like this:

So you should see the option for your group, Haringey Fixers, although it doesn’t look you have any repair data to download yet. Even so, the option should be there in the menu - let me know if it isn’t though!

In any case, you can download the full dataset from Restarters on Restart’s main site here:

It’s licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International License, meaning anyone can download and see the data and use it under the conditions listed here.

And if you’d like even more, we combine this data with repair data from our partners in the Open Repair Alliance (including Repair Café International). You can find the full combined dataset here:

That TRP page could do with updating - “Over 30,000 items…” is more like 130,000 items now!

The Restarters-only zipped dataset is no longer available from the ORA download page, only the full (currently) 200k+ dataset from all partners and contributors is downloadable. Partner-specific datasets are available from the GitHub repository (linked at bottom of page), but non-technical people might not be keen on navigating that option.

The ORDS dataset is not really a substitute for a Fixometer download. At the time of writing this, the current dataset contains records to the end of July 2024, nearly 8 months ago, and it does not include unpowered items.

Thanks for flagging Monique! I’ve updated that page now with the latest stats.

As for the data download, I’ve added a link to the Github repository for the Restarters-specific data for now (I can’t immediately think of a better solution).
