The environmental impact of a PlayStation 4

The Verge has produced a piece on the materials and processes required to produce a PlayStation 4. It’s a refreshing decision for a site known for its “this is my next [insert electronic gadget here]” editorials. The author explores the overall impact on both the environment and the people involved in the production process.

They conclude that the production of one console emits 89 kg of CO2, which is pretty similar to our own calculations for smartphones.

Worth a read (but be prepared to skim the more “poetic” passages):

Interesting but how does the length of the lifecycle compare to smartphones?

As they require screens to use, wondering if this is counted? (After a skim, doesn’t appear so.) If it was counted, they actually have a much higher proportion of energy/carbon usage in the use phase than smartphones.
