Microsoft relents - but wears out your SSD!

@Lee_Grant has pipped me at the post with this breaking news: Microsoft has relented for another year. You can now get Extended Security Updates (if you’re enrolled in the programme) until October 2027.

(I’m repeating here as most people are probably bored with Win10 end-of-life woes, and resigned to whatever solution they’ve been forced to adopt.)

But in the next paragraph of Risky Bulletin, a report that Windows hibernation can wear out your SSD.

Probably not serious for most of us unless you have 32GB of RAM and hibernating once or twice every day. And if you can afford 32GB of RAM then a new SSD isn’t going to put you on a diet of baked beans on toast. Personally, I use Sleep mode, just as good for most purposes though slightly less secure if you might get burgled or leave your laptop on a train, and a week battery might not last a weekend.
