EOL : Microsoft reverses its decision and extends support for Office on Windows 10

Microsoft reverses its decision and will continue to support the Office suite on Windows 10 for three more years. October 2028…

Last January, Microsoft announced that the Office 365 suite would no longer be compatible with Windows 10 starting from October 14, 2025. The company recommended upgrading to Windows 11, although, technically, “the applications will continue to function as before on Windows 10, despite potential performance and reliability issues that may arise over time.”

Yusuf Mehdi, Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer of Consumer Marketing at Microsoft, had been clear: “We believe that one of the most important technologies people will look to refresh in 2025 is not their refrigerator, television, or mobile phone. It will be their Windows 10 PC, and they will move forward with Windows 11.”

A few months later, Microsoft backtracked and now announces that updates will be offered until 2028.

“To help you stay secure during your transition to Windows 11, Microsoft will continue to provide security updates for Microsoft 365 applications on Windows 10 for three years after the end of Windows 10 support,” Microsoft explains on its website. “These updates will be delivered through standard update channels and will end on October 10, 2028.”

This is not the first time Microsoft has changed its stance. Before the announcement of updates being extended to 2028, the Redmond-based company had implied that the Office suite would require Windows 11.
